Spinning workshop

Enjoy a unique experience: a spinning wheel workshop to master all the steps involved in spinning wool from fleece to yarn.

The workshop takes place in Montreal and includes three sessions over three consecutive weekends, for a total of 18 hours of learning.

Suitable for beginners as well as those already initiated, who wish to perfect their skills and deepen their knowledge.

Sundays, January 18 and 25, and February 1, 2026, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

COURSE CONTENT :

  • Spinning wheel anatomy and theory
  • Quebec spinning wheels vs. modern spinning wheels
  • Capsule on the history of spinning
  • Sheep wool and its characteristics: washing raw fleece
  • Fiber preparation: carding, combing and blending board
  • Four spinning techniques and their derivatives
  • Three twisting techniques and their derivatives
  • Different ways to finish yarn
  • Making skeins
  • Notions on color
  • ... and several hours of hands-on spinning!

At the end of the workshop, each participant will leave with at least one skein of hand-spun 2-ply wool.

PREREQUISITES : None

INCLUDED

  • Any sheep's wool (except raw wool), offered in small ribbons, washed, carded and combed.
  • Detailed course notes (approx. 20 pages) to encourage self-sufficiency and ongoing learning after the course.

WHAT TO BRING :

  • Lightweight, comfortable indoor shoes that allow you to feel the spinning wheel pedal (avoid thick-soled sports shoes)
  • Scissors or wire cutters
  • Notebook for taking notes, if desired
  • Spinning wheel, small tools and personal animal fibers (sheep, cat, dog, rabbit, alpaca, pony), according to interest - beware of allergies

  • It is possible to rent a spinning wheel or carding tools with an option to buy. Contact us at info@irenetextile.com for more details.
  • Parking ($) and bike racks next to the building.
  • Kitchenette available (fridge, microwave and unlimited coffee).
